Doctor Who is a long-running British science fiction television programme produced by the BBC about a mysterious time-travelling adventurer known as "The Doctor", who explores time and space with his companions, fighting evil. It is also the title of a 1996 television movie featuring the same character.

Dr. Who first appeared in black and white on 23 November 1963. Since that time, it has gone through many changes and has broadcast over 700 episodes. Ten actors have taken on the role of the Doctor over the years. The spawning of a new Doctor is called regeneration. The Doctor regenerates his body, conveniently allowing a new actor to take on the role.

Often due to the age and unreliability of the TARDIS's navigation system the Doctor explores the universe at random, using his extensive knowledge of science and technology to avert whatever crises he encounters. The Doctor generally travels with one or more companions. Most of these choose to travel with him, while others are accidental passengers.

The show was originally intended to present an educational view of history for children. The educational theme was soon dropped, and science fiction elements quickly took over as the main plotline. Dr. Who would battle many villains, such as his nemeses the Daleks and the Cybermen.

Before it became a cult favorite, Dr. Who was regarded as long-running joke. The special effects used in the early series were widely laughable. Comparing the special effects at the time to the effects used in films today is similar to comparing two tin cans and a piece of string with a mobile phone. Dr. Who only needed to run upstairs to escape the terrifying force that was the bubble-wrapped tin can on wheels, the Daleks.

Even though the special effects were laughable, the show was considered by some to be too upsetting for children. A moral campaigner in the 1970s, made a number of complaints to the BBC. These complaints only led to an increase in the popularity of the show.

The vehicle used to transport Dr. Who and his always female assistant around the universe was known as the Tardis. This was basically a 1950s police box. Although about the size of a portable toilet cubicle from the outside, once inside, it became very spacious. With its white interior and hi-tech chrome feel, it was remarkably similar to a 1980s bachelor pad.

Dr. Who is now going through something of a revival both in Britain and around the world. The last series drew audiences of around ten million. However, Christopher Eccleston, a highly respected actor who played Dr. Who in the 2005 season, became time-travel sick after one season and decided to jump Tardis. Dr. Who has a strong cult and inexplicably looks set to have a continued large fan base for many years.

Actors are said to be a dime-a-dozen. Everyone in the world wants to be an actor, and that's why there's so much competition in the field. There are thousands and thousands of headshots flying around and photo shoots and auditions, and to what purpose? Being cast for a script that was written by an amateur. A part in a film that will go no further than a few film festivals.



Actors don't really have a choice, because they need to accept whatever roles are offered to them to get experience. They have to nod and accept any project that comes their way, even if it's the worst thing they've ever read.



Of course, there are those occasions when our dear thespians go to those auditions and completely fall in love with the script. "I went in to audition because I heard about this project and the synopsis was really interesting. As soon as I got the script and I read the few words, I was totally into it. Then when I finished reading just those two pages... I knew I had to do this, I was in shock and in love with the writing," says Martin Lobe, who auditioned for the role of Donald in Machiavelli Hangman (http://www.hangmanmovie.com).



"You go to hundreds of auditions and you hope you'll hit that one gold mine... it's not about the money as long as the writing is so good," offers Martin James.



Having said all this, one would think that it's definitely easier to work behind the camera than in front of it. Filmmakers make up their own destiny, they write or they find a good script and they go out actively looking for actors. Actors, on the other hand, have to simply wait there to be picked.



Casting Directors feel that it's not so negative. If an actor is good, filmmakers will seek him out, it's just a matter of polishing your tools and you will be found eventually. "Think of it as a more passive-aggressive approach to starting a career. You have to smile, and let them make the first step."



While many would argue that Machiavelli Hangman or Pulp Fiction was all about the writing and it made the acting what it is, others claim that the acting made those films what they are. For instance, Lost In Translation would not have become the brilliant film that it is if it wasn't for Bill Murray's improvisational genius. The script is said to have been originally only 15 pages long and Murray had to fill in the gaps. That's a lot of filling!



There is also a certain masochistic element to being an actor. You have to get used to getting rejected and you have to use it to get stronger. The rejection has to become a pleasure that you can turn into energy. "Some actors go in expecting to be rejected. They get a certain high from it," Bob Fern-Jacobs, after auditioning for Lord of the Rings.



Actors, keep at it, get better. Build your experience, and they will come!

Cables on the other hand cost money to buy and install, and will always be limited in the amount of data they can carry. In other words, while cable companies struggle to improve their infrastructure to meet the constantly growing demand for more data intensive TV technology, Dish Network can simply concentrate on finding better ways to deliver that technology to it's customers.

Another advantage that Dish Network has is that it operates on a greater scale. Most cable companies are local affairs which means that each company operates in a limited area with limited customers. Those limited customers have to bear the brunt of all of the costs associated with running the business. Dish Network on the other hand is a nationwide company that spreads it's administrative costs out over it's 12 million customers. This means that Dish Network costs less to run for each customer than cable and the savings can be passed on to the customers and used to improve programming and technology. Also because of the fact that Dish Network's satellites are broadcasting their signals everywhere, there's no limit on the number of people who can sign up for the service. All you need to get Dish Network service is a place where you can set up a dish and aim it at a patch of sky to the south. But if you want cable TV service and you're too far out of town, you're simply out of luck.

To give credit where credit is due, cable providers are trying to catch up, but considering the disadvantages of their technology and their business model they're simply too far behind. Satellite TV companies like Dish Network will continue to move forward in meeting the high demands of television enthusiasts everywhere.

Additional receiver boxes allow for different types of digital satellite signal reception, such as DVB/MPEG-2 and 4DTV.
